  • What is your favorite opening line from a book you've read?

    "Once, there was a tree"

The Giving Tree is one of my favorite books. It is about the selfless giving of a tree to a boy. There is some controversy over the giving of the tree. Some argue the boy is selfish or that the tree's giving is not teaching the boy self reliance.

The tree and the boy's relationship can be compared to relationships we have in our own lives. In a parent- child relationship, the giving a parent can do is quiet selfless many times. As a parent myself, I would be quiet disappointed if I waited for reciprocity for the giving I did. At the same time, many parents receive emotional needs fulfilled in that they enjoy feeling wanted or useful.

It is very hard for a lot of people to recognize that there are different types of needs. In every relationship there is a give and take.

  • Would you rather attend public school or be homeschooled? Why?

As a teacher and former guidance counselor in the public school system, I can only add what I know from my personal experience. Whenever we got a homeschooled kid, s/he was most likely behind in the curriculum and had a different set of social skills.  These students took longer to adapt and would encounter new issues as not being able to socialize appropriately with their peers.

As I said, this is my personal experience and I know not all homeschool kids are the same and there are exceptions. The social skills required for transition from being homeschooled to public school is a lot different than the socialization skills required for the real world. Whatever you choose, public, private or homeschooled, what you put into it is what you get out of it.

  • Opry and the Ryman

Jimmy and I went to the Ryman tonight. The coal miner's daughter was there! I love living in Music City, USA. It has great, live music everyday of the week. And it is not just country and bluegrass, we have a great symphony and symphony hall. Also, an hour away every year, we have Bonnaroo! Bonnaroo is a kickin music festival. I didn't get to go last year because I was in school, but we are hoping to go this year. Jimmy really wants to see Metallica.
